Since I have been studying textiles from GCSE. I have always been heavily focused on Embroidery, having built up a good understanding and practice of that particular specialist area I want to diversify and learn to hand screen print. I am beginning to see my future when it comes to professionalism and employability, and I am most definitely sure I want to design textiles/wallpapers for major companies, creating my own collections. At this moment in time I am not sure of my major practice but having tried weave and having knitted in the past I know these are not my strong areas and designing with pattern is more for me.
For the Intentions project I am looking to focus my work based on my career path. Having recently been to Bali I was really inspired by the Indonesian Batik dyes and designs. I don’t want to be literal and reinvent my own Batik designs, however I want to use the impact they have on people in a interior environment. Personally the reason I like the Batik prints is purely because of the mish mash of colours they hold, the designs simply are not for me. The colours however can hold such a presence within a room, I want to look at creating a more accepting design/subject matter for the British market but using the impact that the Batik Style holds. I want to use mundane, everyday items/objects/associations within these designs; I have started by using a base of a batik design and adding in elements associated with the ‘everyday’ in Europe/Britain. Linking in to personal associations we as society may have. So creating Batik style prints but using a subject of knives….forks? a ring? However not items that wouldn’t blend well with the design, such as an iphone….. I need to continue my drawings in order to build up a good base of work to process within print. I could run into difficulty with how intricate they become, but for now I’m excited.
